Jeremiah Inn Beautifies Tucson (sort of)

Jeremiah Inn Cleans Up

Forgive us for doing a little “trash talking” today, but yesterday marked the 23rd occasion Jeremiah Inn’s innkeepers have taken to the streets around the inn - Snyder Road and Catalina Highway - and done a clean sweep!  In 1995 we determined to take part in Pima County’s Adopt A Roadway Program and help beautify the neighborhood.  On Thursday, November 20, it was in the upper 70’s and windless when Bob and Beth donned their orange vests (think inmate fashion) and began to fill their bags with whatever appears intentionally or accidentally along side two miles of roadway.  Pima County provides large,  heavy duty bags for the treasure hunt and after about 5 hours work, we had filled eleven of them.  With sore muscles, burrs in our socks, and the satisfaction of a job well done, or done anyway, we treated ourselves to an icy drink.

El Tour de Tucson is coming - November 22, 2008

This coming weekend thousands of bicyclists will converge on Tucson from all over the world to take part in the 26th Annual El Tour de Tucson.  This competitive race permits riders to choose the 109 mile route, or ride 35 miles, 67 miles, or 80 miles in races.   The race includes a  nearby section of Snyder Road and we’ve had the fun of cheering the participants on.   Weather for the race is forecast in the 70’s and should be beautiful.  Ride on!

Backyard Birding at the B & B

Tucson is for the birds……and birders, too! Guests at Jeremiah Inn have enjoyed a family of Gambel quail that hatched within the walled backyard this summer. The proud parents began with 13 chicks in the relative safety of the B & B gardens. It was amusing to see them dart about, learning bird life skills. For weeks they hopped and scurried, busying themselves with eating bugs and seeds from the flowers and shrubs until they mastered flight and over the wall they went.

Happy July 4th, Tucson!

We had the family, we had the friends, we had the lawn chairs, we had the perfect viewing spot for Tucson’s Fourth of July Fireworks display from “A” Mountain….but where were the KABOOMS?  An electrical storm parked too close to the mountain kept the display from starting until almost 10pm!  Groan…we had guests hoping for breakfast the next morning!  It was worth the wait.

“Music in the Park” Welcomes Summer in Tucson

Arizona Symphonic Winds begins its Summer 2008 Concert Series at nearby Udall Park, this Saturday, May 17, 7pm.  Aaaahhh…..it’s hard to imagine how pleasant it is to bring your picnic dinner (or perhaps pick up take-out at Tucson’s famous El Charro Restaurant), settle your sport chairs or blanket we’ll provide, on the grassy slope at Udall Park (5 miles from Jeremiah Inn), and soak in the elegant and exciting music offered by Arizona Symphonic Winds under the starlit desert sky with an almost full moon!  Bob and Beth have been concert sponsors in past years and recently gifted the highly patriotic and Hungarian born maestro, Laszlo Veres, with an American Flag that had been flown in his honor over the U. S. Capitol.  It was greatly appreciated by Conductor Veres.  Let the music begin!

What’s For Breakfast Today??

Making sure that our guests enjoy a fresh and original breakfast each day of their stay is a creative part of inn keeping!  Each day’s breakfast begins with fresh brewed coffee, varietal teas, or cocoa, if preferred.  Juice selections will include four or five choices - pink grapefruit, cranberry/raspberry blend, Concord grape/cherry mix, and orange (of course).  Next will be a yogurt parfait with inn-baked granola, or in the winter months a hot winter wheat cereal with cranberries, perhaps.  A dollop of whip cream dresses up this course.  The plated breakfast will be beautifully decorated with a generous selection of artistically presented fruits, and the centerpiece will be the hot entree of the day, perhaps tortilla quiche and orange muffins.  Since a picture is worth more than words, here is a recent morning’s breakfast…….Breakfast at Jeremiah Inn

Summer can be cool in Tucson

“How do you stay cool in the summer?”, is a frequent question guests might ask. Having moved from Seattle in 1994, Tucson’s weather was definitely a change for Beth and Bob. To enjoy the summer months, we’ve learned to enjoy mornings - usually thirty degrees cooler than the daytime high - taking early walks, and the evenings, marvelous after sunset! Since Arizona never switches to daylight saving time, the sun sets earlier than in its neighboring states. Wonderful evening walks under the moonlight and stars are pure pleasure and a swim after dark is twice as nice. But the best kept secret around is Mt. Lemmon - just 1 mile from the door of Jeremiah Inn Bed and Breakfast begins the highway that will end at 9000 feet elevation and alpine fir trees and much cooler temperatures - think Colorado in your backyard. The Desert is Blooming Beautifully!

A neighbor phoned early this morning to let us know that seven of her night-blooming cereus had exploded into bloom last evening and Bob and I were able to take photos this morning - wish we could include the wonderful fragrance that accompanied the blooms.

Mount Lemmon

Mt. LemmonOne wonderful place to visit while in the Tucson area is Mount Lemmon. It is a favorite of visitors and locals alike, particularly during the summer heat. Mount Lemmon is in the Santa Catalina Mountains, north of Tucson. It rises up out of the desert floor to an elevation of 9,157 feet above sea-level, and receives approximately 180 inches of snow each year. The drive up the mountain takes you through numerous botanical zones from saguaros at the base to fir and aspen at the top. The mountain was named in honor of botanist Sarah Lemmon, who trekked to the top in 1881. Her husband, John Gill Lemmon, an invalid, remained at the base of the mountain.

While staying at the Jeremiah Inn, why not take a day trip up Mountain Lemmon, it is worth the trip!
