Mount Lemmon

Mt. LemmonOne wonderful place to visit while in the Tucson area is Mount Lemmon. It is a favorite of visitors and locals alike, particularly during the summer heat. Mount Lemmon is in the Santa Catalina Mountains, north of Tucson. It rises up out of the desert floor to an elevation of 9,157 feet above sea-level, and receives approximately 180 inches of snow each year. The drive up the mountain takes you through numerous botanical zones from saguaros at the base to fir and aspen at the top. The mountain was named in honor of botanist Sarah Lemmon, who trekked to the top in 1881. Her husband, John Gill Lemmon, an invalid, remained at the base of the mountain.
